Uvulitis
Causes
- Localised trauma following intubation, endoscopy
- Infection, especially Haemophilus influenzae type B and group A streptococci
- Allergic reaction
- Reported in association with cannabis
- There is an association between uvulitis and epiglottitis
Management
General
- Correct positioning to minimise airway obstruction, if present (seated upright, stopped forward)
- Oxygen if required
- Ensure adequate hydration
- Reassurance and nasal breathing
If thought to be infective
- Need to consider and exclude epiglottitis
- Treat with antibiotics
If thought to be allergic
reaction
- Steroids
- Antihistamines
- Adrenaline if evidence of airway obstruction (as per standard anaphylaxis guidelines)
Admit if concerns re progression, or any evidence of airway compromise
