Uvulitis



Causes

  • Localised trauma following intubation, endoscopy
  • Infection, especially Haemophilus influenzae type B and group A streptococci
  • Allergic reaction
  • Reported in association with cannabis
  • There is an association between uvulitis and epiglottitis

Management

General

  • Correct positioning to minimise airway obstruction, if present (seated upright, stopped forward)
  • Oxygen if required
  • Ensure adequate hydration
  • Reassurance and nasal breathing

If thought to be infective

  • Need to consider and exclude epiglottitis
  • Treat with antibiotics

If thought to be allergic reaction

  • Steroids
  • Antihistamines
  • Adrenaline if evidence of airway obstruction (as per standard anaphylaxis guidelines)

Admit if concerns re progression, or any evidence of airway compromise
