Procedural sedation in Children

Background

Those who have successfully completed a training programme in inhalation N₂O or IV Ketamine may wish to sedate childen in appropriate situations.

The CUH paediatric procedural sedation competency course, run by Dr Rory O'Brien includes a manual and flow diagrams (updated 2020 by Dr Airna Kruis), formative on-line lectures, summative MCQs and formal appraisal of simulated cases using N₂O and IV ketamine. Each trainee must successfully complete supervised real cases before sign off. Doctors in CUH should not complete procedural sedation until signed off and safe. Please discuss all out of hours paediatric sedations with the EM consultant on call before beginning the procedure.

Please ensure you complete two forms:

1. Sedation checklist and proforma
2. An adverse event reporting form in ALL cases
