Referrals from CUH ED to Mater Private (Cork) ED



Background

For transfer from CUH ED to Mater Private Cork (MPC).

General transfer criteria

  • Low to moderate acuity patients with suspected acute medical or surgical presentations, likely to require admission, should be considered for transfer to MPC
  • The decision to transfer to MPC may be made by following CUH ED registration, in consultation with a CUH EM Consultant, broadly in keeping with the following undifferentiated complaints

Surgical

  • Abdominal pain ?Appendicitis ?Gallstones ?Diverticulitis

Medical

  • Resp: PE, Community Acquired Pneumonia, Premorbid conditions requiring medical optimisation (Asthma, COPD, Fibrosis)
  • GIT: PUD, stable upper GiB, stable lower GiB , IBD, Non-specific D&V; Refractory Nausea & Vomiting
  • ID: Cellulitis [where CDU bed not available]. [Breast Cellulitis excluded]
  • Endocrine: Diabetics requiring medical optimisation
  • Syncope: Collapse? Cause, Undifferentiated Syncope (exclusion: possible Cardiogenic Syncope)
  • GUT: Complicated UTI

MPC does not accept Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Acute Neurology, Poisoning, Obstetrics/Gynae.


Transfer process

  • Contact the MPC ED (021 601 3216) or call the EM Physician on call to agree transfer
  • CNM ED transferring hospital to CNM MPH call (021 6013216/ 021 6013312) to provide nursing handover pre-transfer using the ISBAR tool
  • Nursing care needs, fall risk, social issues etc to be discussed
  • Email patient details as per Transfer Form with copies of relevant results and investigations to mpced@materprivate.ie
  • Cannula may be left in situ if clinically suitable (please ensure details on the transfer form regarding the cannula are completed)
  • Place patient details (sticker) in MPC transfer book with suspected diagnosis and date (MPC book is located in RASTA)
  • Please ensure contact details (name and telephone number) of referring department/ward are completed on the transfer document


Exclusion criteria

  • Chronic illness requiring more than 72hrs treatment (excluding IV antibiotics)
  • A patient experiencing an acute episode of mental illness
  • IV fluids and blood transfusions
  • Under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol
  • Under 16 years of age
  • Residents outside the catchment area and unable to travel to treatment centre
