  • Truvada is a combination of 2 drugs tenofovir & emtricitabine
  • These are both Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs)
  • Generally, two NRTIs are used in all triple therapy (HAART) drug combinations
  • Take ONE truvada tablet ONCE daily
  • Truvada is usually taken with food


  • Isentress is an integrase inhibitor & contains raltegravir
  • Take ONE Isentress tablet TWICE daily approx. 12 hours apart
  • There are no food restrictions with this drug
  • Tablets should be swallowed whole (not chewed, broken or crushed)

Side effects

Side effects with both Truvada and Isentress are generally mild.

Some patients may experience:

  • Mild headache
  • Feel nauseous
  • Stomach cramps
  • Rash
  • Tiredness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
